The Art of Living Fully

Balancing Work, Family, and Personal Joy

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and lose sight of what truly matters. Living fully means embracing each moment, making time for what brings you joy, and finding a balance between the demands of work, family, and personal time. It’s about creating a life that feels whole and fulfilling, rather than one that’s constantly driven by the next deadline or obligation.

When I started my first business in 2000, a 10,000 square foot children’s edutainment center, we opened with a bang. Business hours were from 10am to 9pm seven days a week and we were packed. I was there every day working long hours just to keep things running smoothly. My work life was going great, but I had only minimal time to spend with my young sons and I had no time at all for myself.

After coming home exhausted and in tears on several occasions, I knew this wasn’t going to work for me and I needed to make some changes to get some balance in my life. We started closing on Mondays and I hired a manager to take over some of my duties. I committed to leaving by 5 pm on weeknights so I could have dinner with my family. I went in later in the morning so I could exercise before work. As a result, I felt better, and I became more productive in the hours I was working.

It wasn’t easy to make the changes because I didn’t want to let anyone down, but they were critical to me living fully and thriving in all areas of my life. With a continued commitment to having balance in my life, eventually I created the perfect situation for myself where I only worked three days a week and often picked up my kids and their friends after school and brought them to play at my business.

Tips for Living a Fuller Life

  1. Set Priorities:

    • Identify what’s most important to you—whether it’s family, career, health, or personal growth. Once you know your priorities, allocate your time and energy, accordingly, making sure to focus on what truly matters.

  2. Practice Mindfulness:

    • Mindfulness helps you stay present and appreciate each moment. Whether you’re at work, with your family, or enjoying some alone time, be fully engaged in what you’re doing. This practice not only enhances your experiences but also reduces stress.

  3. Create a Balanced Schedule:

    • Plan your days and weeks to include time for work, family, and personal activities. Make sure to schedule downtime for relaxation and hobbies. A balanced schedule helps you avoid burnout and ensures you have time for all aspects of your life.

    • Life is made up of small moments that can bring immense joy—watching a sunset, sharing a meal with loved ones, or enjoying a quiet cup of tea. Take time to savor these moments and appreciate the beauty in everyday life.

    • Make an effort to nurture your relationships. Spend quality time with your family and friends and let them know how much they mean to you. Building strong connections adds depth and richness to your life.
