Treading Lightly
How Sustainable Living Fuels Your Wellness Journey
In today’s fast-paced world, where convenience often trumps consciousness, the concept of treading lightly on Earth is more vital than ever. But did you know that living sustainably isn’t just about protecting the environment? It’s also intricately linked to your personal wellness. By making mindful choices that reduce your environmental impact, you can nurture both your health and the planet’s well-being.
The Connection Between Sustainability and Wellness
When we talk about wellness, we often focus on physical health, mental clarity, and emotional balance. But true wellness also involves our relationship with the world around us. Sustainable living encourages us to align our lifestyles with nature, fostering a deeper connection with the Earth. This connection nurtures a sense of purpose, peace, and responsibility, which in turn enhances our overall well-being.
When my son started kindergarten my girlfriend and I started an environmental program at the school. We figured kids were open to learning new ideas and we hoped they would help their parents make changes at home.
One of the first things we did was encourage kids to bring trash free lunches (think bento boxes) with healthy options and we created a trash station at the lunch area where the kids could sort their trash if they were not fully trash free. We had a trash bin, a donation bin (for unopened snacks and whole fruits that we took to a Salvation Army senior housing complex), a compost bin (for food scraps), a recycle bin (for bags and milk cartons), and a bin for chip and snack wrappers that we sent to Teracycle to make into cute bags and other personal items.
Within the first year we were able to reduce the amount of trash sent to landfill from 10 cans a day to 2. The kids had fun sorting their trash and asked lots of questions. Not only were they taking care of the planet, but the trash free lunches lead to parents packing healthier food instead of processed packaged foods. It was a win for their health and a win for the planet.
